THIBODAUX, La. — Sophomore Maria Jose Rojas posted her second multi-goal match of the season to help power UTSA to a 3-0 victory at Nicholls on Friday. It marked the Roadrunners’ fourth win in their last five matches.
Rojas gave UTSA (8-7-2, 5-2-1 SLC) a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute after slipping a shot past Molly Mersereau, who charged the Santiago, Chile, native but was unable to come up with the stop. Fellow sophomore Laylla da Cruz set a new career high with her sixth assist of the season to set up the strike and UTSA took that advantage into halftime.
Just five minutes into the second frame, Rojas struck again with a shot near the top of the penalty box to push the margin to two. Set up by freshman Liv Nyhegn, she tied the Denmark native once again for the team lead with her eighth goal of the season.
The lead proved to be too much for the Colonels (6-11-1, 0-8 SLC), who had few chances against the Roadrunners defense. Nicholls was limited to just seven shots in the match, including three in the second half.
Junior Amanda Ortegon put the game away in the 72nd minute with her third goal of the season, a strike that was assisted by freshman Anissa Munson.
With the defense playing well in front of her, sophomore goalie Danielle Snyder notched four saves and recorded her third shutout in her last four outings. She improved her record to 6-0-2 overall and 4-0-1 in Southland Conference play with the victory.
The Roadrunners conclude ther regular season at Southeastern Louisiana (10-6-1, 4-4 SLC) at noon on Sunday.
