NATCHITCOCHES, La. — Freshman Liv Nyhegn gave UTSA a lead in the opening minute and junior Amanda Ortegon and sophomore Laylla da Cruz added goals in the second half to power the Roadrunners to a 3-0 victory at Northwestern State on Sunday.
Nyhegn wasted no time in giving UTSA (6-7-1, 3-2 SLC) the upper hand with a goal just 23 seconds into the match. The Middlefart, Denmark, native’s header off passes from sophomores Edith Lopez and Maria Jose Rojas sailed by Lady Demons goalie Jessica Danku and tied a school record for the quickest strike in program history. da Cruz found the back of the net just 23 ticks into a 4-1 win against Prairie View A&M (Aug. 22) to set the mark a year ago in her collegiate debut.
The Roadrunners defense limited Northwestern State (7-9, 1-5 SLC) to just three shots in the first half, as UTSA took a 1-0 into halftime.
The advantage doubled in the 57th minute when Rojas set up da Cruz for her second goal of the campaign.
Ortegon then capped the scoring 14 minutes later with a winner that was aided by freshman Anissa Munson.
That was more than enough for sophomore goalie Danielle Snyder, who made three saves en route to her second shutout of the season in improving to 4-0-1 on the year.
UTSA will begin its last home stand of the season on Friday against Lamar (7-6-1, 4-1 SLC). The Roadrunners will honor seniors Katie Dugan, Jodi Leroy, Taylor Padia and Brittany Wilson as part of Senior Night festivities prior to the 7 p.m. contest.
