SAN ANTONIO — Sophomores Laylla da Cruz and Edith Lopez recorded their first goals of the season to send UTSA to a 2-0 victory against Sam Houston State on Sunday at the Recreational Sports Complex.

While the Roadrunners (4-6-1, 1-1 SLC) controlled the pace for most of the first half, they were unable to score until the final seconds.

In pursuit of a long pass from fellow sophomore Valentina Lefort, da Cruz raced past the Bearkats defense and sailed a shot over the head of Mallory Garthwaite for the 1-0 advantage. With just six seconds left in the stanza, the Sam Houston State (4-7-1, 0-2 SLC) could not get off another attempt before halftime.

The UTSA defense did its part in the frame, limiting the Bearkats to just a pair of shots against sophomore goalie Ari Calderon.

That offensive pressure and stellar defense continued until the final whistle.

Lopez gave the Roadrunners some insurance with 63 minutes on the clock. The Columbia, Mo., native scored on a header off a cross from senior Jodi Leroy. The 2-0 cushion would be more than enough, as UTSA picked up its fourth shutout of the season.

Calderon played all 90 minutes and recorded a pair of saves for the first win of her career.

The Roadrunners will look to continue their winning ways at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, when they face I-35 rival Texas State (6-5, 1-1 SLC) at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
