Makela earns preseason All-Conference USA accolades on Tuesday
IRVING, Texas — Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Makela was named to the preseason All-Conference USA Team, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The Mukilteo, Wash., native was a second-team all-conference pick and earned a spot on the league’s all-freshman team a season ago after she appeared in all 19 matches (18 starts) and racked up 90 saves, which ranked third in C-USA. Makela was the first player in the circuit to earn C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors twice and she notched five of her six shutouts during league action, as the Roadrunners did not allow a goal at home during conference play. She made a season-high 13 stops at No. 12 Texas A&M (Aug. 25) in her first-ever start and finished the campaign with a 1.24 goals-against average (0.96 in C-USA play).
Along with the release of the preseason all-conference team, the C-USA office also revealed its preseason poll as voted on by the league’s head coaches. The Roadrunners were picked to finish 11th, while Charlotte, North Texas, Rice, FIU and UTEP topped the poll.
Led by interim head coach Greg Sheen, UTSA returns 13 letterwinners and nine starters from last year’s team that went 5-12-2 overall and 4-4-2 in its first season as a member of C-USA. The Roadrunners will host Incarnate Word for an exhibition match on Aug. 17 before opening their ninth season of play against Houston Baptist on Aug. 22 at Park West Athletics Complex.
