UTSA picks up five second-place finishes at Saturday's Houston Opener
HOUSTON — UTSA saw five athletes record second-place finishes at Saturday's Houston Opener.
Evelyn Clark (200m), Ernestine Cray (long jump), Whitney Flannel (high jump), Grace Kohler (5k) and Nina Herrera (800m) all earned silver medals at the Roadrunners' second meet of the season.
Clark clocked a 26.17 in finishing second to Lamar's Saschelle Slaughter (26.03) in the B section of the 200 meter dash.
Meanwhile, Cray recorded her second podium finish in as many meets after breaking the sand in 19-1 ¼ (5.82m) in the long jump. Her performance was tops among the 33 collegians that competed, as Funmi Jimoh (unattached) topped the field with her measurement of 20-5 ¾ (6.24m).
Kohler registered a 19:13.01 in her second-place performance. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Regina Salinas crossed the line in 19:06.54 en route to gold in the eight-runner field.
Flannel recorded a 5-7 (1.70m) en route to runner-up honors in the high jump, but she finished as the top collegian, as Cassie Wiley (unattached) was victorious with her clearance of 5-8 ¾ (1.75m).
Herrera circled the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse oval four times in a career-best 2:17.27, which was just nine hundredths of a second behind Lamar's Louise Webb. Grace Williamson placed third in 2:17.30.
Other Roadrunners that earned bronze medals included Kristina Cantu (800m B section/2:26.13), Alyssa Diaz (mile/5:08.61) and Shantel Swift (200m/25.78).
UTSA will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Texas A&M 10-Team Invitational.
