Makela named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week
IRVING — Bubba Makela was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
The Mukilteo, Wash., native helped UTSA open C-USA play this past weekened with a 1-0-1 mark by registering nine saves in 200 scoreless minutes of action. She now has a league-leading total of 55 stops this fall.
Makela, the first freshman to win the award this season, made four stops in the Roadrunners’ scoreless tie against Florida Atlantic on Friday night before notching five to help propel UTSA to a 2-0 win against defending league regular-season champion Rice on Sunday for its inaugural C-USA victory. The win also was the program’s first in four tries against the Owls.
The weekly award is the first for a UTSA player since Danielle Snyder earned Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors on Oct. 25, 2011.
Makela and the Roadrunners (2-8-1) will return to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 4, when they play a 6 p.m. (CT) contest at Charlotte (6-4, 1-1 C-USA).
