IRVING — Bubba Makela was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Makela, the first freshman to win the award this season, made four stops in the Roadrunners’ scoreless tie against Florida Atlantic on Friday night before notching five to help propel UTSA to a 2-0 win against defending league regular-season champion Rice on Sunday for its inaugural C-USA victory. The win also was the program’s first in four tries against the Owls.
