Texas blanks Roadrunners on Sunday night, 3-0
AUSTIN — Texas scored a goal in the first half and added a pair in the second to defeat UTSA 3-0 on Sunday night at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in the Roadrunners’ final non-conference match of the season.
Anka Grotle led the Roadrunners (1-8), with three shots, while Katherine Tesno made a season-high five saves in relief of starter Bubba Makela. In all, the Birds tallied nine shots, including four on goal.
Meanwhile, the Longhorns (6-3-1) kept the pressure on UTSA all night and recorded 33 shots with goals coming from three different players. Goalkeeper Abby Smith made four saves for the home squad and notched her fourth shutout of the campaign.
The UTSA defense kept Texas away from Makela early in the match and limited the Longhorns to just four shots in the first 20 minutes.
However, Texas turned up the pressure and after hitting the post twice earlier got on the board in the 32nd minute on Brooke Gilbert’s fourth goal of the season. Sharis Lachappelle set up the winner with a corner kick that deflected off Makela’s gloves and right to Gilbert, who found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The score would stand until the 54th minute, when Chantele Campbell picked up a rebound and connected for her second goal of the fall. Five minutes later, Kelsey Shimmick collected her fourth winner of the campaign with a shot from just outside the penalty box that ended Makela’s night.
Making her second appearance of the season, Tesno kept the Longhorns off the board in the final 29 minutes, but the Roadrunners could not manage a goal against Smith.
The Roadrunners will open Conference USA play at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, when they host Florida Atlantic (2-6-1).
