Sims named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Matt Sims was named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Sims helped UTSA to three victories in four games last week and he posted two saves in a pair of late-inning appearances at Louisiana Tech. The Cypress native struck out four of the seven hitters he faced and allowed just a single in his 2.1 stanzas of work.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder entered last Thursday's game against the Bulldogs with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth. He proceeded to strike out the potential tying run on four pitches and preserved the Roadrunners' 4-0 victory en route to picking up his seventh save of the season.
Two days later, Sims was called on in the eighth inning of a one-run game. The right-hander picked off the runner he inherited at first base and then retired the next two hitters to work out of the jam. In the ninth, he gave up a leadoff single but recovered to retire the next three batters, including two on strikeouts, to earn his eighth save.
Sims, who has not allowed a run in his last four outings, is tied for the team lead with 25 appearances. He owns a 4-2 record to go along with a 2.70 ERA and is second on the team with 54 strikeouts in 43.1 innings.
UTSA (31-23) has won six of its last seven games and enters this week's WAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Roadrunners will open pool play against fifth-seeded Sacramento State (33-23) at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie.
