Ianno, Wade earn Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week accolades
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — UTSA's historic victory last Saturday at South Alabama resulted in the Roadrunners winning two of the three Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards on Monday, as sophomores Sean Ianno and Triston Wade were honored for their contributions on special teams and defense, respectively.
Ianno drilled a career-long 51-yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining to lift UTSA to its first road win in program history. It was one of four field goals that he made on the day, as the Pflugerville native also was good from 47 and 32 yards in the second quarter and from 21 yards out earlier in the deciding frame. The four boots tied his career best set against Bacone last Sept. 24. He also extended his program-record PAT streak to 34 with three more in the season opener and five of his eight kickoffs resulted in touchbacks. The game-winning field goal was redemption for Ianno, as his 26-yard field-goal attempt at the end of regulation in last season's matchup was blocked and the Jaguars went on to post a 30-27 triumph in double overtime.
Meanwhile, Wade was a one-man wrecking crew for the Roadrunners on Saturday. The second-year free safety racked up a career-best 11 tackles (5 solos/6 assists), forced a fumble on a 48-yard kickoff return and intercepted a first-and-goal pass in the end zone in the opening quarter with UTSA trailing 7-0. The Tyler native now has forced a total of seven turnovers (four fumbles/three interceptions) in the first 11 games of his career.
The pair also was recognized nationally, as Ianno was tabbed a Lou Groza Collegate Place-Kicker Award “Star of the Week,” while Wade was an honorable mention Jim Thorpe Defensive Back Player of the Week honoree.
UTSA opens its home schedule on Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce (0-1). Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the Alamodome.
