SAN ANTONIO — UTSA fell 63-59 in its home opener to former Southland Conference foe Lamar on Thursday night at the Convocation Center despite Kamra King’s career-high 27 points.

King’s big night included an 11-for-12 performance at the free throw line and Miki Turner added 13 points and Niaga Mitchell-Cole chipped in with 10 for UTSA (0-2).

Lamar (2-1) got a career-high 24 points from Gia Ayers and 18 from Dominique Edwards.

King led all scorers in a back-and-forth first half that featured seven ties and seven lead changes with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. Mitchell-Cole connected on a pair of 3-pointers to contribute seven points, as the Roadrunners shot 44 percent (10-for-23) in the first 20 minutes.

Trailing 22-18, King and Mitchell-Cole combined for 11 points in a 13-4 run, which gave UTSA a 31-26 advantage at the 1:02 mark of the first half.

However, a 4-0 spurt by Lamar narrowed the lead to 31-30 at the half.

UTSA opened the second stanza with an 11-6 run to take a 42-36 lead into the first media timeout. King scored seven of the 11 points with an array of finishes including a jump shot, 3-pointer and pair of free throws.

The Lady Cardinals responded to close within one, 44-43, on Edwards’ layup with 11:07 remaining. Three minutes later, Lamar tied the game at 47 on a layup by Alice Robinson.

Turner answered back with a floater in the lane, which gave the Roadrunners a 49-47 edge, but Ayers connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Lady Cardinals their first lead, 50-49, since holding a 22-20 lead with just under five minutes to go in the first half.

UTSA got no closer, as it connected on only one field goal over the final four-plus minutes.

The Roadrunners will be back in action at 5 p.m. on Sunday when they host UT Arlington (1-1).
