FRISCO — More than 970 student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s 2012 Spring Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced on Tuesday.

A record total of 979 student-athletes were honored and that surpassed the record of 953 set last spring. This year’s list boasts 11 Southland Student-Athletes of the Year, eight Players of the Year and a total of 141 student-athletes who recorded a perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester.

The honor roll includes student-athletes who participated in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field.

UTSA placed 88 members on the honor roll, which matched last spring's school record, and 10 carried a 4.0 GPA.

Sophomores Molly Fichtner (softball) and Jeromie Hill (men's basketball), both of whom were chosen as Southland Student-Athlete of the Year in their respective sport, as well as Southland Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year Phil Steinert (men's track & field) led the way. The men's and women's track & field teams both had a department-best 19 student-athletes recognized, while baseball checked in third with 11 honorees.

The Southland Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The list is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintain a minimum 3.00 GPA during their semester of competition. Honorees are nominated by their respective academic advisors and must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
