Roadrunners to open spring campaign this week with three road matches
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA's 2014 spring season will begin this week with three road matches. The Roadrunners will open the campaign on at 2 p.m. on Wednesday against No 17 Texas before traveling to Houston to face the Cougars at 1 p.m. on Friday and New Mexico in a neutral-site contest at 2 p.m. the following day.
The Roadrunners are coming off Saturday's 6-1 exhibition victory against St. Mary's. UTSA captured two of the three doubles matches and five the six singles tilts to make quick work of the visiting Rattlers.
The Longhorns, 18-11 overall and 7-2 in Big 12 Conference action a year ago, also will open their 2014 season on Wednesday. Texas will come into the match as the nation's 17th-ranked squad and it is the highest-ranked school from the Big 12. All-American Breaunna Addison is ranked 22nd in the ITA preseason singles rankings she joins Pippa Horn as at No. 21 in the country's preseason doubles rankings. Ratnika Batra is the Longhorns' other nationally-ranked player at 77th.
Houston returns six letterwinners from last year's team that posted a 13-11 record and a crop of newcomers that was ranked as the top recruiting class among mid-majors and the sixth-best overall in Maria Andrea Cardenas, Tina Rupert and Despoina Vogasari.
New Mexico finished the 2013 season with a 7-15 overall ledger and the Lobos were just 1-7 in Mountain West Conference matches.
