UTSA falls at UTEP on Friday night, 2-0
EL PASO — UTEP registered a pair of first-half goals and kept UTSA off the scoreboard in a 2-0 victory on Friday night at University Field.
Kaytee O’Brien led the Roadrunners (4-11-2, 3-3-2 C-USA) with four shots, including two on goal, while Alexis Alaniz, Anissa Munson and Happy Orere-Amadu each recorded a pair. UTSA managed 11 shots on the night, but it could not find the back of the net.
Tori Martyn and Lauren Katada notched goals for the Miners, who improved to 11-4-3 overall (4-2-2 C-USA). Keighton Allen made four saves en route to her first shutout of the campaign in what was her first start of the season.
After a few misfires from UTEP early on, Martyn put the home squad on the board in the 21st minute with her third goal of the season. The senior took advantage of the UTSA defense when it failed to clear the ball and she fired a shot past goalie Bubba Makela for the early 1-0 advantage.
Ten minutes later, Katada scored on a penalty kick to push the lead to 2-0. The strike was the sophomore’s first of the season and provided UTEP with all the offense it needed.
UTSA posted seven shots in the second half, but it could not get one past Allen, who made two saves in the period.
The Roadrunners will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they host Louisiana Tech (9-8-1, 4-4 C-USA). UTSA will honor senior Laylla da Cruz before the match as part of Senior Day festivities.
