SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open the fall season this weekend by splitting its squad to compete at the Baylor H-E-B Intercollegiate in Waco and the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open in Corpus Christi.

Diogo Casa, Yannick Junger, Kolby Kilgo, Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman are scheduled to compete in the Baylor H-E-B Intercollegiate, which will be contested at Hurd Tennis Center. The Roadrunners will battle players from Baylor, Gonzaga, Idaho, Illinois, Laredo Community College, Louisiana-Lafayette, Oklahoma and UT Arlington in two 32-player singles draws and one 64-team doubles bracket.

Play begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and results will be posted online here. Additionally, Baylor will provide a live video stream (weather permitting) for the six grandstands courts here.

Meanwhile, UTSA will send Fabian Brand, Boburjon Kamiljanov, Matt Mussenden and Harley Pearson to the Islanders Open, which will be held at the H-E-B Tennis Center. The foursome will face players from Houston, Lamar, Incarnate Word, Sam Houston State, St. Edwards, Texas-Pan American and Texas A&M-Kingsville in singles and doubles brackets.

Singles play gets under way at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, while doubles matches are slated for 4 p.m. Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The finals are set for 9 a.m. and noon on Sunday. Complete tournament information and results can be found here.

Both events are officially sanctioned by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and results count toward individual ranking points in the ITA singles and doubles ranking system.

The Roadrunners welcome back eight veterans, including six players who helped UTSA post a 13-11 record and advance to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament semifinals last spring.

The Birds are bolstered by the return of Joel Rubio, a first-team all-WAC selection at the third spot who recorded a 13-7 singles mark in 2013, and David Kelleher, who was tabbed second-team all-conference after racking up a team-high 15 victories. Junger led the Birds in wins two years ago with 13, but he sat out last season due to injury, while Casa posted 13 wins last season.

Three newcomers have joined the team this fall. Stillman, a junior who transferred from Toledo, and true freshmen Fabian Brand (Netherlands) and Harley Pearson (Australia).
