SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA
track & field teams will look to continue their strong starts to the
2013 indoor season this weekend when they compete at the Howie Ryan
Invitational & Multis. The two-day meet is scheduled to begin on Friday at
Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse.
The opening day will get underway at 11 a.m. and the men's and women's weight throw, pentathlon, heptathlon, women's pole vault, 60-meter hurdles and 60m dash will be contested. Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. and the meet will wrap up eight hours later.
UTSA's men registered four victories and a total of nine podium finishes at last
Friday's Leonard Hilton Memorial. Leading the way was senior
All-America high jumper Keith Benford, who won the meet championship for
the third consecutive year. He cleared 6-10 ¾ (2.10m)
in his lone attempt at the height and it was his third victory in as
many meets this season (ninth of illustrious career). The Roadrunners now have picked
up 11 gold medals through the season's first three meets and currently sit atop the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) standings in nine events.
Meanwhile, the women posted three wins and a total of nine podium finishes a week ago. Senior triple
jumper Eboni Johnson was victorious for the second consecutive week after skipping to a measurement of 39-11 ¼ (12.17m),
which was a four-inch improvement from her winning mark at
the Jan. 12 Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational. She was tabbed WAC Field Athlete
of the Week on Wednesday. The Roadrunners now have picked up seven
gold medals through the season's first three meets and lead the WAC standings in seven events.
