UTSA unveils remainder of 2013-14 schedule on Wednesday
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head men’s basketball coach Brooks Thompson unveiled the remainder of his program’s 2013-14 schedule on Wednesday. The Roadrunners previously announced their Conference USA (C-USA) slate on July 30.
In all, the ledger will see UTSA face seven teams that made the postseason last year along with eight games against programs that finished the 2012-13 campaign in the top 100 of the Ratings Percentage Index.
“We’re very excited about this schedule and all of the challenges that come with it,” said Thompson, who will begin his eighth season on UTSA's bench this season. “Our goal every year with the schedule is to prepare our team to compete for a conference championship. With several quality road and home contests early in the season, we think this schedule will do just that and get our team ready to face the strong competition that we will see in Conference USA.”
The Roadrunners will host Southeastern Oklahoma on Oct. 31 in their lone exhibition contest before opening the regular season with four of their first five games at the Convocation Center.
That stretch starts on Nov. 9 when UTSA welcomes Northern Arizona to the Alamo City. The Birds then will travel to Houston for a matchup with the Cougars on Nov. 14 before returning home to face McMurry (Nov. 18), Texas-Pan American (Nov. 21) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Nov. 23).
UTSA will follow that up with a three-game road trip that will begin with a Nov. 26 tilt at Nicholls, which is a return game from last year’s Sears BracketBusters matchup in San Antonio. Led by a double-double from Jeromie Hill (16 points/12 rebounds), the Roadrunners topped their former Southland Conference mates, 76-58, in that contest.
The Birds then will head to Lubbock for a Nov. 29 meeting at Texas Tech before ending the swing with a Dec. 7 game at Texas-Pan American.
CSU Bakersfield (Dec. 18) will visit the Convocation Center for the second consecutive season, while home dates against Georgia State (Dec. 22) and Cameron (Dec. 31) close out the calendar year.
The Roadrunners will conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule with a Jan. 4 contest at Arkansas before opening C-USA action against Marshall five days later in San Antonio.
Other home conference matchups include Charlotte (Jan. 11), Rice (Jan. 30), Louisiana Tech (Feb. 1), FIU (Feb. 13), Florida Atlantic (Feb. 15), North Texas (Feb. 27) and UTEP (March 6).
Meanwhile, UTSA will hit the road to face UAB (Jan. 16), Middle Tennessee (Jan. 18), UTEP (Jan. 25), Old Dominion (Feb. 6), East Carolina (Feb. 8), Southern Miss (Feb. 20), Tulane (Feb. 22) and Tulsa (March 2).
All 16 conference teams will participate in the C-USA Tournament, which will be played from March 11-15 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso.
