UTSA falls to Samford, 2-0
SAN ANTONIO — Samford scored one goal in each half and kept UTSA off the scoreboard en route a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Park West Athletics Complex.
Laylla da Cruz led the offense with three shots, while goalkeeper Bubba Makela made four saves for the Roadrunners (1-5), who closed out a four-match home stand.
Meanwhile, Katie Peters recorded a pair of saves for the Bulldogs (3-2) and recorded her third shutout of the season. Amanda Abbott and Hallie Georgi supplied the offense with their first goals of the season.
Samford controlled the action for much of the first half and out-shot UTSA, 8-5.
After Makela made three saves in the first 16 minutes, the visitors broke through in the 18th minute on Abbott’s strike. The Marrietta, Ga., native was set up by passes from Anna Allen and Michelle Moll before slipping past the defense and beating Makela to her left.
The score remained 1-0 until the 52nd minute, when Georgi stole the ball from a Roadrunners defender and she cashed in on a one-on-one opportunity for the final margin.
The match was halted in the 75th minute due to lightning in the area and UTSA nearly sliced the lead in half just after the delay.
Da Cruz looked to put the Roadrunners on the board in the 80th minute when she sent a free kick from 25 yards out that hit off the crossbar. The Bulldogs cleared the rebound and drained the final 10 minutes off the clock for the victory.
UTSA kicks off a three-match road trip on Friday, Sept. 13, at Kentucky (4-1-1).
