Menís basketball announces inaugural Conference USA schedule on Tuesday
SAN ANTONIO — Six contests against 2012-13 postseason teams, eight home games and a pair of tilts against intrastate foe UTEP highlight UTSA’s inaugural 16-game Conference USA (C-USA) schedule, head men's basketbal coach Brooks Thompson announced on Tuesday.
In all, the Roadrunners will play nine games against teams that netted at least 18 wins in 2012-13. Among that group are a pair of league regular season champions in Louisiana Tech (Western Athletic) and Middle Tennessee (Sun Belt), an NCAA Tournament squad (Middle Tennessee), three National Invitational Tournament participants (Charlotte, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss) and CollegeInsider.com Tournament Champion East Carolina and event participant Tulane.
“We’re excited for our first season in Conference USA and the challenges that the league presents,” said Thompson, who recently saw his contract extended as he heads into his eighth year at UTSA. “There are plenty of exceptional coaches and players in this league and we look forward to some great matchups this season.”
UTSA will tip off its first C-USA season on Jan. 9 at the Convocation Center against Marshall.
Charlotte, which also is making its debut in the league after posting its first 20-win season since 2007-08, comes to the Alamo City two days later.
The Birds then will get their first conference road test at UAB’s Bartow Arena on Jan. 16 before traveling to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for a Jan. 18 matchup with a Middle Tennessee squad that is coming off a 28-6 season, which included a perfect 16-0 mark at the Murphy Center.
The Roadrunners will head west to El Paso on Jan. 25 for the first of two games against UTEP prior to home contests against a pair of familiar foes in Rice (Jan. 30) and Louisiana Tech (Feb. 1).
A Feb. 6 matchup at Old Dominion will feature a rematch of the 2012 Liberty Tax Classic finale, a 79-70 victory that propelled the Roadrunners to the tournament crown. Other contests away from San Antonio include East Carolina (Feb. 8), Southern Miss (Feb. 20), Tulane (Feb. 22) and Tulsa (March 2).
Meanwhile, UTSA will host FIU (Feb. 13), Florida Atlantic (Feb. 15) and North Texas (Feb. 27) before facing the Miners again in the regular-season finale (March 6).
All 16 teams will participate in the C-USA Tournament, which will be played from March 11-15 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso.
UTSA’s non-conference schedule will be announced at a later date.
