SAN ANTONIO — UTSA announced Wednesday that senior Kelsey Jewasko (volleyball) and sophomore Jeromie Hill (men's basketball) have been named the 2011-12 Will & Mary Hathaway Academic Athletes of the Year.
Jewasko was named the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year, tabbed a second-team Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award All-American and also was a third-team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American following her senior campaign. She helped lead the Roadrunners to a 22-11 record and an appearance in their second consecutive Southland Tournament championship match last fall en route to earning first-team All-Southland honors for the fourth time in her career. The San Antonio native recorded a team-leading 612 digs (5.23/set) during the 2011 campaign and finished as the program's career leader with 2,280. It marked the second consecutive year that Jewasko, who owns a 3.95 GPA in interdisciplinary studies, collected the Hathaway Award.
Meanwhile, Hill was named the Southland Student-Athlete of the Year and also earned second-team
National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 23 and
all-conference accolades following his sophomore season. The Cairns,
Australia, native averaged 12.5 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per
game to help the Roadrunners to an 18-14 record and a third-place finish
in the Southland West Division with a 10-6 mark. The 6-foot-8 forward
shot 48.6 percent from the floor, including 40.7 percent (35-of-86) from
behind the 3-point line, and recorded 48 assists, 30 steals and 22
blocks in starting all 32 contests. Hill carries a 3.18 GPA and he plans to major in business with an emphasis in events, sports and tourism marketing/management this fall.
The award is named in honor of the late Will & Mary Hathaway, who both were longtime UTSA Athletics supporters.
