SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to action on Thursday night when it begins play in the three-day UTSA Classic at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners will host Belmont at 6:30 p.m. before playing the Bruins again at 12 p.m. on Saturday and UTEP later that evening at 6:30 p.m.
UTSA (2-2) enters the tournament having dropped back-to-back contests to Furman and Rice. The Roadrunners fell in four sets to the Owls in Tuesday's home opener. Junior McKenzie Adams led the way with a double-double of 15 kills and 14 digs, which was her third of the season.
Belmont posted a 1-2 record at the Belmont Invitational last weekend. The Bruins opened the year with a sweep of Alabama A&M before dropping back-to-back matches to Northern Colorado and TCU. Jamie Lundstrom earned Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday after recording 49 digs (5.44 dps) during the opening weekend of the season.
Meanwhile, the Miners started the campaign with three consecutive losses to Fresno State, Idaho State and Arizona State at the El Paso Sports Commission Invitational last weekend. Jeane Horton earned all-tournament honors after tallying 51 winners (4.25 kps) and hitting at a .417 clip.
UTSA and UTEP will be squaring off for the 33rd time on Saturday. The Miners hold a 21-11 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the 1993 season. UTEP has won seven of the last eight meetings, including a five-set victory on Sept. 10, 2010 in San Antonio.
The Roadrunners and Bruins will be matching up for the first time on Thursday night.
