HUNTSVILLE — UTSA nearly overcame a two-set deficit, but Sam Houston State rallied to win the final frame and snapped the Roadrunners' 12-match winning streak on Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum (25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 16-25, 15-13).

UTSA (18-9, 12-1 SLC) lost for the first time since Sept. 17 and it saw their consecutive sets won streak end at 36 when the Bearkats (14-12, 8-5 SLC) won the opening stanza.

Carli Kolbe led Sam Houston State with 18 kills and Kendall Cleveland added 15. Meanwhile, Jamie Haas collected a match-high 29 digs to anchor the Bearkats defense, which held the Birds to a .158 hitting percentage.

UTSA's comeback fell short despite a career-high 60 assists from redshirt junior Kelsey Schwirtlich and junior Whitney Walls' match-high 19 kills.

Senior Elise Huskey recorded her team-leading ninth double-double with 21 digs and 14 winners, sophomore McKenzie Adams added 16 kills and senior Kelsey Jewasko collected 27 digs.

The Roadrunners trailed throughout the opening set and managed only a .042 hitting percentage after committing nine attack errors.

The Bearkats broke an 8-all tie to take the lead for good. They led by as much as seven and picked up six winners from Kolbe to earn the win.

UTSA was unable tie the match in the second stanza.

Walls fueled a 4-0 run with three consecutive kills to give the Birds an 11-9 lead. UTSA stretched the advantage to 16-12, but Sam Houston State responded quickly with a 4-0 run to tie things up. Adams put the Roadrunners back up by a point after slamming down a set from Schwirtlich, but the lead was brief, as the Bearkats scored five consecutive points to take the lead for good and go up 2-0 in the match.

Adams brought the Roadrunners back with five winners in the third panel.

UTSA took an 18-14 advantage only to see it wiped away by a 5-1 run from the Bearkats. However, Schwirtlich responded by slipping a kill across the net to give the Birds a 20-19 lead. From there, UTSA won five of the last seven tallies to extend the contest.

The Birds tied the match after hitting .273 in the fourth set.

Tied at five, Schwirtlich set up Adams on the outside for a kill, which put the Roadrunners in front for good. UTSA extended its advantage to as much as eight and Huskey finished it off with a kill on another assist from Schwirtlich.

The Roadrunners held an early 3-2 lead in the deciding frame, but Sam Houston State answered with three straight points. The Birds pulled within one at 14-13 after junior Brittney Malloy's 10th winner of the night, but freshman Leigh Larralde's ensuing serve went long.

UTSA will wrap up its road trip with a 1 p.m. tilt on Saturday at Stephen F. Austin (13-15, 6-7 SLC).
