SAN ANTONIO — UTSA learned its NCAA opponent and destination on Sunday and the Southland Conference Tournament Champion Roadrunners will be heading to Austin to face national No. 9 seed Texas on Friday, Dec. 3. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Gregory Gymnasium.
UTSA will bring a 22-11 overall record into its second-ever national tournament appearance in program history. The Roadrunners' five-set victory a week ago against Central Arkansas propelled them into their first NCAA Tournament in a decade and they have won of 17 of their last 20 outings.
The Longhorns, 23-5 and currently ranked eighth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Top 25 Poll, earned an at-large berth in the 64-team field after finishing second in the Big 12 Conference with an 18-2 mark this fall. The Horns advanced to last year's National Championship Match where they lost to Penn State in five sets.
American (29-2) and UCLA (21-8) are the other two teams in the sub-regional and they will play the first match at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The two winners will play at 6:30 p.m. the next day for the right to advance to the Regional rounds, which also will be played in Austin.
