SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open play at this year's Southland Conference Tournament on Thursday when it takes on regular season champion and 46th-ranked Stephen F. Austin at the Schlief Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches. The third quarterfinal of the day is scheduled for 2 p.m.
UTSA (9-12), which is making its first postseason appearance three years, earned the No. 8 seed by virtue of its 4-7 league mark, a ledger that included wins in two of its last three matches.
Sophomore Isabelle Jonsson, who earned second-team All-Southland accolades on Tuesday, headlines the Roadrunners lineup. The Eskilstuna, Sweden, native has won her last five singles outings owns a team-best 14-7 overall record, which includes a 9-2 mark at the No. 2 position against league competition. Jonsson also has teamed up with senior Stefanie Peana for 10 triumphs at the top doubles spot.
Meanwhile, freshman Irene Gandara Gonzalez is the only other UTSA player that has register double-digit wins this spring, as she owns 10 victories between the Nos. 5 and 6 slots in the singles lineup.
The Ladyjacks (20-4) claimed their first league title this spring with wins in 10 of their 11 conference tilts.
Antonia Kolovou leads Stephen F. Austin with a 21-2 overall record in singles action, including a perfect 10-0 mark in Southland play. Six other Ladyjacks have winning records in singles competition, including Elena Kordolaimi, who is 17-5 overall and 9-3 at the top spot. Meanwhile, Jithmie Jayawickrema and Alina Shazhko make up SFA's most-successful doubles team with an 18-2 mark, including a perfect 10-0 record in circuit play.
The Ladyjacks defeated UTSA by a score of 6-1 on April 7 in Nacogdoches in the lone meeting between the two clubs this spring.
The winner of Thursday's match will take on either No. 4 Northwestern State or fifth-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. in Friday's semifinals.
