Senior Stefanie Peana has played the No. 1 singles position for UTSA the last two years after transferring from Texas Tech. The Austin native recently had a chance to speak with goUTSA.com about how the team is performing this season, her plans after graduation and much more.
How do you think the team has performed so far this year?
"I think our team is playing confident. We've had some good wins this year and I know we are all feeling good about that."
What is like to play at the top singles position?
"It's difficult. I know every time I go out there I'm going to be challenged and have a tough match. I have to be mentally prepared every single time I go on the court and be ready to fight."
If you could only play one, would you rather play singles or doubles?
"That's hard. I enjoy playing doubles, but I would have to choose singles. I consider myself a better singles player."
What makes Isabelle Jonsson such a good doubles partner?
"She's a very good tennis player, which helps take pressure off of me. I know that Isabelle is going to make the shots and I feel confident in her. We read each other very well."
Where is your favorite place to play?
"In California on hard courts. I like the weather there and playing in good weather makes a huge difference."
What is the most difficult part of playing tennis?
"It's very rigorous and exhausting. It requires a lot of mental and physical performance every day on the court. It takes 100-percent effort. It's challenging, but it's worth it when you pull out the win."
As a senior student-athlete, have you reflected much on your career?
"I am really thankful to have had the opportunity to play four years of college tennis. I look back now and it seems that it went by so fast, all of hard practices, tough matches and big wins. It taught me a lot of discipline and skills that I can take into the real world with me."
What do you plan to do with your marketing degree after graduation?
"I'm scheduled to graduate this May and I have a job lined up at Dell after graduation. I did an internship last summer that turned into a job offer."
How do you spend your free time?
"With my friends."
If you had a walk-out song as you entered the court what would it be?
"The theme song from Mulan, which starts out, 'Let's get down to business.'"
If you could play any other sport at UTSA, what would it be and why?
"Volleyball. I really like volleyball and I think if I didn't play tennis I would be playing it instead."
