SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s tennis team begins a five-match road trip this weekend when it heads to the Bay Area. The Roadrunners (3-2) will face future Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose State at 3 p.m. (CT) on Friday, followed by 1 p.m. contests with San Francisco and Santa Clara the following two days.
UTSA notes: The Roadrunners have won three consecutive matches against Texas-Pan American, Laredo Community College and St. Edward’s after opening the spring with back-to-back losses. Four players — senior Caroline Dedering, juniors Katie Ottenbreit and Micaela Silva and sophomore Kavya Menon — are tied for the team lead with three singles victories. Meanwhile, the tandem of junior Stefanie Peana and freshman Isabelle Jonsson has posted 3-1 mark at the No. 1 doubles spot.
San Jose State notes: The Spartans, 11-15 overall and 0-8 in WAC play last spring, blanked UC Santa Cruz in their season opener on Feb. 8. The team is led by sophomore Chau Truong, who recorded 16 singles victories and 11 doubles wins last year.
San Francisco notes: The Dons sit at 1-5 following a 7-0 setback at UC Santa Barbara last Sunday. USF enters the weekend on a five-match losing streak after opening the spring with a 7-0 victory against Cal State Bakersfield. It is an experienced team comprised of two seniors, a trio of juniors, three sophomores and a pair of freshmen.
Santa Clara notes: The Broncos have opened the season with seven victories in their eight outings, including three shutouts, and their lone loss came at Washington State last Friday (4-3). Santa Clara will match up against Cal Poly on Saturday before facing UTSA on Sunday.
