AUSTIN — No. 17 Texas downed UTSA by a score of 6-1 in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

The Roadrunners (0-1) only were able to win one match from their neighbors to the north and that came at No. 2 singles when Miriam Rosell Conudas outlasted Elizabeth Begley in three sets [3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9)].

The Longhorns (1-0) took an early lead after winning a pair of doubles matches.

Ratnika Batra and Lana Groenvynck handed Daniela Garcia-Diaz and Alena Shichkova a 6-2 setback at the third spot. Begley and Neda Koprcina then downed Lina Hallgren and Isabelle Jonsson by the same score at the No. 2 position.

It was all Texas in singles play, as the Longhorns won each of their five contests in straight sets.

UTSA will return to action at 1 p.m. on Friday at Houston in what will be the Cougars' 2014 season opener.
