SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s team will host an exhibition match against St. Mary’s at 1 p.m. this Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
After posting seven wins last spring, the Roadrunners will be seeking their first winning season since 2009 when the team went 16-8.
UTSA is bolstered by the return of Jacobea Junger, a sophomore that tied for the team lead with 10 victories in singles play last season. Senior Isabelle Jonsson, a Southland Conference and Western Athletic Conference All-Academic honoree the last two years, also is back after tying Junger with 10 singles triumphs a year ago.
The Roadrunners welcome newcomers Nicole Karaklis, Lina Hallgreen and Miriam Rosell Canudas. Each made their debut in the fall.
Rosell Canudas was tabbed Conference USA Player of the Month this past October. The freshman from Barcelona, Spain, won a total of nine matches (five singles/four doubles) at a pair of tournaments and advanced to the Wildcat Flight championship final at the Wildcats Invitational in her first tournament as a Roadrunner.
UTSA will have to keep an eye out for St. Mary’s Mariana Rong. The junior went a perfect 21-0 last spring in singles play and led the Rattlers to an 18-5 record. Rong also had a team-high five wins in the fall.
The Roadrunners will open regular season play next week with three road matches at Texas (Jan. 22), Houston (Jan. 24) and New Mexico (Jan. 25).
