UTSA scored two runs in the ninth to break a 6-6 tie and dealt Sam Houston State an 8-6 loss on Saturday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium. The Roadrunners improved to 26-18 overall and 16-4 in Southland Conference play, while the Bearkats dropped to 27-18 on the season and 11-9 in league action.

The Bearkats took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Clint Mann stroked a two-run single to score Austin Boggs and Heath Pugh.

The Roadrunners scored five unanswered runs off four hits and three Sam Houston State errors one inning later. Sophomore Michael Rockett kept the frame alive when he reached on an error by Boggs with two outs. Rockett then came around to score on junior Trent Lockwood’s double to right field. Senior Ryan Saltzgaber reached base on another miscue by Boggs and advanced to second when Clint Mann committed a throwing error, which allowed Lockwood to come home. UTSA tallied three more runs on three consecutive singles by juniors Zach Etheredge, Phillip Allen and Marshal Davis.

The Roadrunners added another run in the top of the fifth when redshirt freshman Tim Palincsar was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a throwing error by pitcher Jesse Marshall and crossed the plate on Allen's sacrifice fly to deep right field.

The Bearkats rallied for three runs in their half of the frame to tie the game at six.

Senior Mitch Ponza led off the ninth with a double to left field and a Rockett walk put runners on first and second. A wild pitch by Luke Prihoda moved Ponza and Rockett into scoring position. Lockwood’s sacrifice fly to right brought home Ponza with the go-ahead run and Saltzgaber with a sacrifice fly to left to give UTSA a two-run advantage.

Junior J.T. Mackey (6-2) came in relief and held the Bearkats scoreless over the final three innings for his team-leading sixth win of the year. Mackey allowed just one hit.

Ponza led the Roadrunners offense going 3-for-5 with one run scored. Lockwood, who doubled twice, and Allen each added a pair of RBIs.

Prihoda suffered his third loss of the season, allowing two runs in 2.2 innings.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
