Junior Michael Rockett was 3-for-5 and had the game-winning hit on Sunday.
SAN ANTONIO — Junior center fielder Michael Rockett’s game-winning hit with one out in the bottom of the 10th gave the UTSA baseball team a 5-4 win over Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference action at Roadrunner Field.

Sophomore right hander Zach Calhoon collected his second win of the season for the Roadrunners (32-12 17-4 SLC). Calhoon went 2.1 innings, allowed two hits and struck out a pair of batters.

Junior shortstop James Keithley and Rockett led the way with three hits apiece, while junior designated hitter Jose Hernandez and senior catcher Zach Etheredge added two hits apiece. Etheredge also posted two RBIs on the day.

Meanwhile, Guillaume Duguay went the distance for the Bearkats (26-18, 12-9 SLC), giving up fives runs on a dozen hits, while striking out six Roadrunners.

UTSA lit up the scoreboard first with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rockett got things started with a single up the middle and then stole second. Junior right fielder Aaron Powell’s base hit through the right side plated Rockett and advanced junior first basemen Trent Lockwood, who reached on a walk, to second. Hernandez then smacked a 1-2 pitch to left field to load the bases and Etheredge followed with a base knock down the right field line to bring home Lockwood and Powell to give UTSA a 3-0 edge. A sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Ryan Rummel plated the final run of the frame.

Sam Houston State cut the lead 4-1 in the top of the fifth. A double and single by Nick Zaleski and Mark Wyatt, respectively, put runners on first and third with nobody out. Ryan Weber’s fielder’s choice brought home the first run for the Bearkats.

SHSU tied the game at four in the eighth with three runs on four hits. Seth Hammock’s double to right field highlighted the inning.

The Roadrunners sealed the sweep with a run in the bottom 10th. Freshman second baseman Ryan Hutson was hit by a pitch to put the winning run on. Keithley then laid down a perfect bunt allowing Hutson to go from first to third with no one covering third base. With one out, Rockett singled in the winning run.

UTSA hit’s the road for a non-conference game at No. 28 Houston on Wednesday, April 30. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
