NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Kansas City Royals selected Daniel Rockett in the ninth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft on Friday.

Rockett, the eighth pick of the ninth round (264th overall), became the second-highest draft choice in the program's 22-year history and the 25th draftee overall. Mark Schramek was a first-round selection by the Cincinnati Reds in 2002.

The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) second-team honoree hit .328 with 13 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 48 RBIs this past spring. The Sugar Land native also led the team with a .562 slugging percentage and stole six bases in eight attempts.

Rockett was twice named WAC Hitter of the Week (Feb. 18 & March 4) and he posted 25 multiple-hit and 13 multiple-RBI games during his senior campaign. He also tied a program record with five hits in UTSA's season-opening victory against Air Force on Feb. 15.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound outfielder finished his career as one of the top offensive producers in school history.

Rockett ranks among the Roadrunners' all-time top 10 in five offensive categories: at-bats (761/4th), runs (149/t-7th), hits (218/t-8th), home runs (25/t-9th) and RBIs (135/7th).

His older brother, Michael, was a 2008 All-American and four-year standout for UTSA from 2006-09. He was a 13th-round selection by the Detroit Tigers following his senior campaign. The brothers are the nephews of Pat Rockett, who was the 10th overall pick by the Atlanta Braves in the 1973 MLB Draft.

"We are very proud of Daniel and it's a well-deserved opportunity for him," UTSA head coach Jason Marshall said. "He carried this ball club on his back in the first half of this year and helped the us win the WAC Tournament Championship and a regional in the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-sport star in high school and we dreamed about his athleticism transforming on the baseball field the way it ended up this year. I think the Royals staff did their homework and really appreciated the tools he brings to the table."
