CORVALLIS, Ore. — UTSA practiced and met with the media on Thursday at Goss Stadium, as the fourth-seeded Roadrunners began their on-site preparations for Friday's NCAA Tournament Corvallis Regional opener.

UTSA (35-23), winners of its last seven games (10 of 11 overall), will square off with No. 3 national seed Oregon State (45-10) at 7 p.m. (CT) on Friday.

Below is a transcript of head coach Jason Marshall's media comments after Thursday's workout.

UTSA head coach Jason Marshall
Thursday, May 31 — Post-practice media transcript

On how excited the team is to be in the NCAA Tournament …
"We've had a lot of momentum rolling through the month of May. To say we're excited is an understatement. We're very fortunate to be here representing the WAC. We've played good baseball. We had a couple of sweeps to end our conference regular season and we really played well in our conference tournament. I'm proud of our guys. They've earned this opportunity and really bought into the overreaching goals we've had since the beginning of the season."

On the recent play of the team …
"We've played well most of this season. Finishing fourth in the WAC is nothing to frown upon. I think we were just two-and-a-half games out of first. We won some great ballgames in the conference tournament; a 14-inning game against Sacramento State, a 1-0 game against Cal State Bakersfield — the league champ — and then the 11-4 win against Dallas Baptist in the championship game."

On what has clicked for the team toward the end of the season …
"Well, throwing a lot of strikes and playing good defense really are the main factors down the stretch. That really started in the middle of April. I've said it many times, the Sacramento State Sunday game for us — I think we were 5-8 at the time in conference play and we won that Sunday to beat a team that had won the WAC the year before — it just started a confidence that we continued to build. Then beating Dallas Baptist on their home turf at the end of April was really big. That's a program that's well-respected in the state of Texas and has played in regionals and super regionals. It just started the ball rolling."

On the makeup of the team …
"We've had a consistent offense most of the season. You look at our numbers and they're very true numbers. We've been doing that against most of our opponents regardless of WAC or Big 12 opponents in the middle of the week. We've swung the bats pretty well, so that's been a staple. What's vaulted us forward has been playing solid defense and throwing strikes. Really competing hard is what the character of the ball club is all about."
