Roadrunners capture series finale with San Jose State, 14-8
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA took advantage of three errors by San Jose State shortstop Ricky Acosta and the Roadrunners scored 10 unearned runs en route to a 14-8 victory against the Spartans on Sunday afternoon at the Bird Bath.
UTSA (16-12, 2-4 WAC) broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fourth.
John Welborn extended the frame after reaching on an Acosta fielding error with two outs and that loaded the bases. Daniel Rockett then cleared the bases with a double on the following pitch from San Jose State starting pitching Johnny Melero and he scored three pitches later on Horacio Correa III's single.
The Birds never looked back, as they plated four runs in the sixth and four more in the eighth.
The Spartans (9-19, 3-3 WAC) scored six times in the four final frames but fell short of the series sweep.
UTSA's 15-hit onslaught included seven doubles.
John Bormann was 3-for-3 with a two-bagger, a pair of walks and two runs scored, while Rockett went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and he also scored three times.
San Jose State racked up 14 hits, including six for extra bases.
Sheldon Daquioag led the way with a pair of doubles, a two-run home run and three RBIs. Matt Carroll added a solo homer in the sixth.
Brock Hartson (3-3) earned the win after allowing three runs in 5.2 stanzas. The right-hander scattered eight hits, walked two and struck out one in a 100-pitch effort.
Meanwhile, Melero (0-3) gave up nine runs (three earned) on eight hits over his five-plus innings of work.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Tuesday, April 2, when they travel to College Station to face No. 13 Texas A&M (18-11). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
