SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to action this weekend when it plays I-35 rival Texas State in a three-game home-and-home series.
The set begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos. The two clubs then will travel to the Alamo City for 2 p.m. tilt the following afternoon at Roadrunner Field before heading back to San Marcos for Sunday's finale, which is slated for 1 p.m.
The Roadrunners (20-27, 9-17 SLC) are coming off a two-game split against Nicholls last weekend. The Birds run-ruled the Colonels in seven innings, 14-1, in last Friday's opener, but Nicholls bounced back with a 10-2 victory a day later. Sunday's rubber match was canceled due to unplayable field conditions.
Sophomore John Welborn enters this weekend's series on the heels of a breakout week at the plate. The Sherman native batted .600 (6-for-10) with a home run, three RBIs and three stolen bases in three games for the Birds.
Meanwhile, senior Casey Selsor continues to lead UTSA offensively. The senior utilityman is hitting at a .315 clip with nine doubles, eight triples, a homer and 25 RBIs. He also has stolen a team-high 14 bases in 15 attempts.
Junior Ryan Dalton and sophomore RJ Perucki bolster the Birds' lineup with batting averages of .314 and .301, respectively.
Twelfth-year head coach Sherman Corbett has announced that Selsor (4-6, 4.56 ERA), a left-hander, will start Friday night's contest, while Saturday and Sunday's starters have yet to be decided.
The Bobcats (27-19, 15-12 SLC) enter this weekend's series having lost their last two outings, including a 3-0 setback against No. 2 Baylor on Wednesday night.
Jeff McVaney leads Texas State at the plate with a .326 batting average, 13 doubles, a pair of triples, eight round-trippers and 33 RBIs. Casey Kalenkosky also is a power threat with eight long balls and 32 RBIs.
The Bobcats will send right-hander Travis Ballew (9-3, 2.38 ERA) to the mound on Friday night. He will be followed in the rotation by southpaw Colton Turner (5-2, 2.00 ERA) and righty Kyle Finnegan (5-5, 3.50 ERA).
Texas State owns a 46-27 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to UTSA's inaugural 1992 season. The Bobcats have won the last eight meetings between the two clubs and the Roadrunners' last victory came on May 1, 2009 (15-6 in San Marcos).
