UTSA to open Conference USA Tournament play on Wednesday against second-seeded UAB
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will begin play at the double-elimination Conference USA Tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Wednesday with a matchup against No. 2 seed UAB.
The tournament consists of two separate four-team brackets with the winners of each pod meeting in a one-game, winner-take-all championship game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, which will be televised on the CBS Sports Network. The tournament champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The matchup with the Blazers (35-19) will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs and the only opening-round game pitting two teams that have yet to play each other this season.
Probable starters for the Wednesday contest match a pair of all-conference hurlers.
Seventh-seeded UTSA will counter C-USA Pitcher of the Year Chase Mallard (9-2) with sophomore right-hander Brock Hartson (6-3).
The Roadrunners (32-24) are in the midst of the finest pitching season in program history. UTSA has five of the 11 lowest single season ERAs in school history and the lowest team ERA by more than a half a run. The program record 3.31 ERA was set in 1994, while this year’s squad comes into the postseason event at 2.78.
The winner of Wednesday's contest will advance to play the winner of the East Carolina/Southern Miss game at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, while the losers of both games will play a 12:30 p.m. elimination game eariler in the day.
