GULF SHORES, Ala. — Fabiola Arriaga is tied for first place and UTSA is in second after the first round of the Conference USA Championship, which teed off on Monday at Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club (par 72/6,145 yards).

Arriaga fired a four-under-par 68 to match her career-low round and lead the Roadrunners, who are competing in their first-ever C-USA Championship. The senior recorded four birdies on the front nine and two more on the back to go along with an eagle on the par-five 15th en route to posting a two-under 34 on each side. It marked the third 68 and seventh sub-70 round of her UTSA career. The Torreon, Mexico, native was one of three players who shot a 68 and that trio holds a three-shot lead on the field with 36 holes remaining.

Libby Thomas is four shots behind Arriaga and in a tie for sixth place after carding a 72, a season-best opening round for the Midland native. The freshman posted four birdies and played the par fives at 3-under.

A pair of Roadrunners is one shot behind Thomas and in a tie for 10th. Taylor Newlin registered a tournament-high 15 pars en route to a 73, while Brogan Townend turned in three birdies in her 1-over-par round.

UTSA is in second place in the 13-team field behind that foursome's performance. The Roadrunners, who are ranked No. 56 by Golfweek and 57th by Golfstat this week, posted a 2-under 286 and are five shots behind No. 34 Tulane (281). Middle Tennessee (294), FIU (295) and No. 46 East Carolina (296) round out the top five.

The second round will get underway with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
