Final round of Dallas Athletic Club/SMU Invitational cancelled due to lightning
DALLAS — Sunday's final round of the Dallas Athletic Club/SMU Invitational has been canceled due to lightning, leaving UTSA in fourth place behind a runner-up finish from Fabiola Arriaga.
The third round was underway for 45 minutes when lightning forced the second delay of the morning. Officials made the decision to cancel the final 18 holes soon thereafter.
The Roadrunners posted a 604 (307-297) to finish ahead of a pair of top-20 teams and five total top-50 squads in the 16-team field. No. 48 Baylor won with a 15-over 591 (294-297), followed by 18th-ranked LSU (595) and No. 29 North Carolina (597). UTSA was ahead of No. 40 Kansas (605), 15th-ranked Oklahoma State (606), No. 16 Wake Forest (611), 49th-ranked SMU (613), Texas Tech (619), TCU (620) and Kansas State (620) in the top 10.
Arriaga, a senior from Torreon, Mexico, toured the 6,257-yard, par-72 Dallas Athletic Club layout in one-under par 71 in Saturday's second round. She finished in a five-way tie for second at two-over 146, her top showing since also tying for second at the 2012 Golfweek Conference Challenge in recording her 14th top 10.
Taylor Newlin tied for 16th after carding a seven-over 151 (75-76), while Libby Thomas tied for 50th with a 157 (74-83). Brogan Townend and Aimee Ponte tied for 60th (83-76—159) and 64th (87-74—161), respectively.
The Roadrunners will return to action next week against Baylor. The two-day tournament is scheduled for April 12-13 in Waco.
