UTSA to defend Southland Conference Championship this week

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will look to defend last year’s league crown and earn a trip to an NCAA Regional for the second consecutive year when it opens play at the three-day Southland Conference Championship on Monday morning at Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco.

The Roadrunners enter the tournament having finished in the top five in each of their last three events, including back-to-back wins at the Islanders Classic and Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate.

Last season, UTSA won its first conference title by seven strokes and 2011 Southland Freshman of the Year Fabiola Arriaga tied for the top spot on the individual leaderboard before falling to Lamar’s Stine Pedersen on the third playoff hole.

Where: Vaaler Creek Golf Club (par 72/5,994 yards) — Blanco, Texas

When: Monday, April 16 — Wednesday, April 18

Format: Three-day event with tee times for each round.

Teams: Central Arkansas, Lamar, McNeese State, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, UTSA.

· The Roadrunners have won a school-record three tournaments this season (The Alamo Invitational, Islanders Classic, Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate)
· In addition, UTSA has five top-five finishes this season after doing so six times in 2010-11
· The Birds enter the event ranked No. 49 by Golfweek and No. 54 by golfstat.com

· Has six top 10 finishes this year
· Ranked by Golfweek as the No. 125 player in the country, the highest rank of any Southland player
· Two-time Southland Conference Golfer of the Month (November 2011/March 2012)
· Her career-best round of 69 came in the first round of The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) and The Challenge at Onion Creek (Nov. 7-8)
· 2011 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference
· Tied for first place at the 2011 Southland Championship

Summer Batiste (Sr. - Spring, Texas)
· Fifth on the team with a 76.89 stroke average
· Named Southland Conference Golfer of the Month for February after tying for the top spot at the Islanders Classic (Feb. 27-28)
· Shot a season-low 71 three times
· Two-time second-team All-Southland selection
· Owns six career top-10 finishes
· Recorded three eagles last season to rank 16th in the nation
· Finished tied for 14th at 2011 Southland Championship

Shannon Jungman (Sr. - Pflugerville, Texas)
· Second on the team with a career-best 76.00 stroke average
· Three top five finishes this season, including a career-best third-place finish at the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate (March 16-18)
· Set career marks for single round (69) and 54-hole score (73-69-74-216) at The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1)
· Tied for fifth at the 2011 Alamo Invitational and 2011 Southland Championship
· Has appeared in more tournaments (34) than any other current UTSA golfer

Taylor Newlin (So. - Frisco, Texas)
· Fourth on the squad with a 76.63 stroke average
· Tied with teammate Summer Batiste for the top spot at the Islanders Classic (Feb. 27-28)
· Recorded an eagle in the first round of the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate (March 16-18)
· Shot a season-low 54-hole score of 220 twice
· 2011 second-team All-Southland
· Finished fourth at the 2011 Southland Championship
· Shot a career-best 69 at the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Women's Championship
· Finished in the top 15 four times last season

Paola Valerio (Jr. - Mexico City, Mexico)
· Third on the team with a 76.63 stroke average
· Shot a season-best round of 71 at the Texas A&M "Mo"Morial (Sept. 11-13) and The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1)
· 2010-11 Southland Conference Women's Golfer of the Year
· Only two-time first-team All-Southland selection in program history
· Set school records with a single-round 66 and 54-hole score of 212 to finish fifth at the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships
· Two-time Southland Conference Golfer of the Month (October 2010/February 2011)
· Led the team and conference with a 75.25 stroke average to set a UTSA single-season record last year
