UTSA record fifth top-five finish of 2011-12 at Anuenue Spring Break Classic

KAPALUA, Hawai`i — UTSA fired a final-round 303 on Tuesday at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic and the Roadrunners finished with a 54-hole team score of 913 (308-302-303), which was good for fifth place in the 14-team field.

It marks the squad's fifth top-five finish of the 2011-12 season and the Birds will enter next month's Southland Conference Championship riding a streak of three consecutive such efforts.

UTSA accomplished the task against a strong field that featured five teams currently ranked in’s top 25. The Roadrunners finished ahead of No. 19 Pepperdine (sixth/919=298-307-314) and 22nd-ranked Oregon (t-seventh/920=314-298-308).

No. 14 Colorado (889=299-289-301), 15th-ranked Cal (891=295-296-300), No. 13 Tennessee (892=299-293-300) and Mississippi (902=300-294-308) occupied the top four spots of the team standings.

Sophomore Fabiola Arriaga carded a 74 for the third consecutive round to finish tied for sixth with a 222 (74-74-74). She opened the day with a birdie on No. 8 and added three more to her scorecard to finish in the top 10 for the sixth time this season.

Meanwhile, senior Shannon Jungman continued her strong spring season with a 224 (76-74-74) to tie for 12th. Like Arriaga, the Pflugerville native opened with a birdie on her first hole and finished with four overall.

Junior Paola Valerio jumped up to a 28th-place tie with a 76 in her final round, which gave her a three-round total of 231 (79-76-76). She recorded a birdie on No. 15 and carded a total of three for the tournament.

Sophomore Taylor Newlin also moved up a spot to a 44th-place tie with a 238 (81-78-79), while senior Summer Batiste improved two places to finish tied for 61st at 247 (79-87-81).

Cal’s Daniela Holmqvist shot a 76 on the final day and held off Pepperdine’s Alina Ching to take individual medalist honors with a 214 (68-70-76).

The defending Southland Champion Roadrunners are now off for the next three weeks before playing at the annual conference tournament, which is scheduled for April 16-18 at Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco.
