Roadrunners to compete at Islanders Classic this week

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to the links this week for the Islanders Classic at Corpus Christi Country Club (par 72/6,093 yards). Six other Southland Conference schools will be represented at the event and the Roadrunners will be making their first trip to the course since winning the 2011 league championship there last April.

Junior Paola Valerio tied for second at last year's Islanders Classic with a 220 (73-73-74), while UTSA finished fourth at 905 (298-299-308).

Where: Corpus Christi Country Club (par 72/6,093 yards) – Corpus Christi, Texas

When: Monday, Feb. 27 – Tuesday, Feb. 28

Format: Two-day event with 36 holes played on Monday and a final round with shotgun start on Tuesday.

Teams: Bradley, Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Lamar, McLennan CC, North Dakota State, Oklahoma City University, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas-Pan American, UMKC, UTSA.

Fabiola Arriaga (So. – Torreon, Mexico)
· Leads the the squad with a 74.83 stroke average
· Won The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) with a career-low 213 (69-72-72)
· Her career-best round of 69 came in the first round of The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-) and The Challenge at Onion Creek (Nov. 7-8)
· 2011 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference
· Tied for 1st at the 2011 Southland Championship


Summer Batiste (Sr. – Austin, Texas)
· Fifth on the team with a 77.22 stroke average
· Shot a season-low 71 in the final round of The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) and the second round of The Challenge at Onion Creek (Nov. 7-8)
· Two-time second-team All-Southland selection
· Owns four career top-10 finishes
· Recorded three eagles last season to rank 16th in the nation
· Finished tied for 14th at 2011 Southland Championship

Shannon Jungman (Sr. – Pflugerville, Texas)
· Third on the team with a career-best 76.80 stroke average
· Recorded back-to-back top-20 finishes to close the fall season
· Set career marks for single round (69) and 54-hole score (73-69-74-216) at The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1)
· Tied for fifth at the 2011 Alamo Invitational and 2011 Southland Championship
· Has appeared in more tournaments (30) than any other current UTSA golfer

Taylor Newlin (So. – Frisco, Texas)
· Fourth on the squad with a 76.94 stroke average
· Recorded her best finish of the fall at the Challenge at Onion Creek (Nov. 7-8) where she tied for 10th
· Best 54-hole score of the fall came at The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) where she placed 16th with a 220 (76-74-70)
· 2011 second-team All-Southland
· Finished fourth at the 2011 Southland Championship
· Shot a career-best 69 at the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Women's Championship
· Finished in the top 15 four times last season

Paola Valerio (Jr. – Mexico City, Mexico)
· Second on the team with a 76.50 stroke average
· Shot a fall-best round of 71 at the Texas A&M “Mo”Morial (Sept. 11-13) and The Alamo Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1)
· 2010-11 Southland Conference Women's Golfer of the Year
· Only two-time first-team All-Southland selection in program history
· Set school records with a single-round 66 and 54-hole score of 212 to finish fifth at the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships
· Two-time Southland Conference Golfer of the Month (October 2010/February 2011)
· Led the team and conference with a 75.25 stroke average to set a UTSA single-season record last year
