Newlin leads group of Roadrunners at Texas Women's Open

GARLAND — Sophomore-to-be Taylor Newlin finished in an 11th-place tie on Thursday to lead a total of four current or former Roadrunners that were among the top 50 at the Texas Women's Open, which was played at Eastern Hills Country Club.

The Frisco native carded a 145 (72-73), while teammate Chelsea Bretcher tied for 39th with a 152 (73-79).

In the opening round, Newlin knocked in a birdie on the 11th hole and she shot even-par on 14 holes. The 2011 second-team All-Southland Conference performer posted a pair of birdies in the final round on hole Nos. 2 and 14.

A native of Austin, Bretcher also carded three birdies during the tournament on Nos. 3, 13 and 17 in the finale.

Former Roadrunners Shelly Martinez and Allie Jordan also competed in the event.

Martinez tied for 39th after posting scores of 72 and 80, while Jordan UTSA's first-ever Southland Conference Champion in 2009, tied for 49th with a 154 (76-78).
