Newlin leads Roadrunners on opening day of SunTrust Gator Invitational
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Taylor Newlin fired a 72 to lead the UTSA women's golf team on the first day of the SunTrust Gator Invitational, which began on Friday at Mark Bostick Golf Course (par 70, 6,002 yards).
Newlin's two-over-par effort has the senior from Frisco in a nine-way tie for seventh place in the 81-player field. She recorded four birdies and is just three shots off the pace (69) set by Karolina Vickova of host Florida.
Fabiola Arriaga is one stroke behind her fellow senior after carding a 73 and the Torreon, Mexico, native is in a tie for 16th with 36 holes remaining.
Brogan Townend is in 59th (78), Aimee Ponte is 80th (86) and Chelsea Bretcher is 81st (89) to round out the UTSA lineup.
The Roadrunners turned in a 309 and are tied with South Florida for 13th in a loaded field that includes nine top-50 squads. No. 30 Ohio State and No. 42 Florida State are tied for the lead after each posted a 292. Penn State (293), No. 12 Arizona (294) and No. 29 Virginia (294) round out the top five.
Round two is slated to tee off at 8 a.m. (CT) on Saturday.
