Arriaga leads Roadrunners on first day of Betsy Rawls Longhorns Invitational

AUSTIN — Fabiola Arriaga fired a two-under-par 70 and UTSA is in 12th place after the opening day of the Betsy Rawls Longhorns Invitational, which began on Sunday at The University of Texas Golf Club (par 72/6,143 yards).

Arriaga posted a pair of birdies and an eagle-two on the par-four first hole en route to her lowest round of the fall campaign. The senior from Torreon, Mexico, is in a tie for 11th place in the individual standings, three shots behind day-one leaders Dani Darquea of Miami (Fla.) and Mississippi State's Jessica Peng.

Brogan Townend recorded an even-par 72 and is tied for 28th, while Libby Thomas and Taylor Newlin are tied for 51st after each posted a 75. Chelsea Bretcher is tied for 89th (80).

The Roadrunners carded a four-over 292 in the opening round and they are seven strokes in front of New Mexico, Tennessee and Texas. Miami (Fla.) fired a 12-under 276 and holds a five-shot lead with 36 holes remaining. Top-ranked UCLA is second (281), followed by No. 8 Arizona State (283), SMU (284) and Mississippi State (284).

The second round is slated to tee off at 8 a.m. on Monday.
