No. 12 Texas A&M slips past UTSA on Sunday night, 1-0
COLLEGE STATION — Shea Groom’s goal in the 79th minute broke a scoreless tie and lifted No. 12 Texas A&M to a 1-0 win against UTSA on Sunday night at Ellis Field.
Grace Wright set up the lone score of the contest for the Aggies (1-1), who bounced back from Friday night’s 1-0 setback to No. 7 Duke.
Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper Bubba Makela recorded 13 saves for the Roadrunners (0-2), while junior Happy Orere-Amadu led the offense with three shots. Makela’s 13 saves were the most by a UTSA keeper since Dacia Webb tallied a school-record 16 against Baylor on Sept. 3, 2010.
Texas A&M fired 11 shots in the first half but could not get one past Makela, who notched three saves in the period.
The score remained scoreless until the 79th minute, when Wright found Groom for the game-winner.
The Roadrunners managed three shots in the final 11 minutes of the contest, but they could not find the back of the net for the equalizer.
Jordan Day picked up the win in goal for the Aggies to improve to 1-1, while Makela (0-1) was saddled with the loss despite 10 second-half saves.
The Birds will open a four-match home stand on Friday, Aug. 30, when they begin play at the UTSA Classic against Sam Houston State (1-0). Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Park West Athletics Complex.
