MCKINNEY — Junior-to-be Taylor Newlin registered a 3 and 1 match-play victory on Tuesday morning in the opening round of the Women’s Texas Golf Association (WTGA) State Amateur Championship,
which is being played on the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country
Newlin topped Arlington native Camry Tardy, who will begin her sophomore season at TCU this fall, and she now will face Fort Worth’s Chaney Uhles in the Round of 16, which tees off at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Frisco native advanced to match play on Monday after firing a six-under-par 66, which was the top qualifying round of day.
Newlin started her opening round strong with birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 before another on No. 7 to card a three-under on the front nine. That momentum carried over to the back side, where she shot one-under on No. 10 and then closed the round with birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 to take the top spot by three strokes.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Thursday and the remaining two players will tee off for the championship at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
