TULSA, Okla. — The UTSA doubles duo of Diogo Casa and Yannick Junger has advanced to the main doubles draw of the ITA All-American Championships, which is being played at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Casa, a sophomore from Pelotas, Brazil, and Junger, a junior from Stuttgart, Germany, teamed up for four wins in two days in the qualifying doubles section and now are one of 32 tandems left in the main draw, which is schedueld to begin on Thursday.
Casa and Junger opened the bracket on Tuesday with a narrow 8-7 (9) victory against Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzales of Miami (Fla.). They then knocked off the No. 15-seeded doubles team of Johnny Grimal and David O'Leary of Memphis, 8-5, to advance to Wednesday's action.
The Roadrunners duo edged George Washington's Francisco Dias and Danil Zelenkov, 8-7 (3), in the first match on Wednesday. Casa and Junger then upset the fourth-seeded team of Guillermo Alcorta and Axel Alvarez from Oklahoma with an 8-5 decision to advance to the main draw.
Casa and Junger will face the sixth-seeded team of Manfred Jeske and Mike Nott of Arkansas in the round of 32 at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
In other action, Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman teamed up to advance to the third round in the same qualifying draw. Following a first-round bye, the duo dispatched Middle Tennessee's Victor Cornea and David Fox, 8-6, before being eliminated by No. 9 seed Elliott Orkin and Gordon Watson of Florida, 8-5.
