SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will begin defense of its Southland Conference Tournament Championship this weekend when it hosts the league's annual postseason event at the UTSA Tennis Center. The second-seeded Roadrunners (10-9) will play No. 3 UT Arlington in the opening semifinal at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

A tough final month of the season, in which the Roadrunners played four ranked opponents in their last five matches, has prepared the Birds for tournament play according to first-year head coach Jeff Kader.

"Our team is playing with a lot confidence heading into the tournament," Kader said. "Three of our last five matches were against teams in the top 20 in the nation. We've played against great competition all year and, at this point, we should be ready to play at a high level."

Five players from this year's club helped UTSA win the tournament championship last season.

"Experience plays a huge role," Kader said. "Having that experience and knowing what it's like to play in the postseason is extremely beneficial."

Headlining the Roadrunners' lineup are a pair of first-team All-Southland performers in sophomore Tyler Brown and junior Daniel Moser.

Brown owns a team-leading 14-5 overall record and he was a perfect 5-0 in conference play.

Moser was equally as good in league action with a 5-0 record and he has registered the highest win total (12) by a UTSA newcomer since 2007 this spring.

Sophomore Martin Ayala, who is 11-8 at the top flight this season, will team up with senior Daniel Moreiras at the top doubles spot, where the duo went undefeated in league action and collected second-team All-Southland honors.

The Mavericks (12-9) are led by first-team all-conference performer David Subirats, who has compiled a 12-6 overall record, including a spotless 5-0 ledger in league action. UT Arlington comes into the match havng won four of its last six outings.

The Roadrunners and Mavs will be meeting for the 15th time at the Southland Tournament. UTSA has won the last three meetings between the two squads at the event, including a 4-0 victory in last year's championship match in Corpus Christi.

The Birds took the only match between the two clubs this season, a 4-3 victory on March 6 in Arlington.

UTSA, which has won two Southland Tournament crowns in its history, has advanced to the championship match in eight of its 16 tournament appearances.
