Junger named Conference USA Tennis Male Athlete of the Week
IRVING — Yannick Junger was named Conference USA Tennis Male Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Junger posted a perfect ledger in both singles and doubles completion to help UTSA to a 2-1 record last weekend.
The Stuttgart, Germany, native won all three singles matches at the No. 1 spot, beginning with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory against Ilija Cuic of No. 63 Wichita State in the Roadrunners’ only setback of the week. He outlasted Juan Cruz Soria of Texas-Pan American, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5), to lead UTSA to a 6-1 win on Saturday morning, and he swept Michael Maciel of NCAA Division II No. 29 St. Mary’s, 6-1, 6-1, to help the Birds to a 7-0 shutout of their crosstown foes that afternoon.
In doubles, Junger teamed with Boburjon Kamiljanov for three victories at the No. 2 position. The pair posted 8-4 victories against Wichita State’s Cuic and Jocelyn Devilliers and UTPA's Soria and Alejandro Sanoja, and took care of Jared Fellows and Bob Resink of St. Mary's, 8-5.
Junger now has won six of his last seven singles matches and he has combined with Kamiljanov for triumphs in five of their last seven contests. His weekly award is the second by a Roadrunner this year (Tomas Stillman, March 11).
UTSA (8-11) will return to action this weekend with a trio of road matches. The Roadrunners will face Lamar at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Louisiana-Lafayette at the same time the following afternoon and Tulane at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
