SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men’s tennis team will open its spring season against Texas Tech on Saturday, Jan. 18. First serve in the second match in three years between the two programs is scheduled for 11 a.m. at McLeod Tennis Complex in Lubbock, Texas.
The Red Raiders, 15-11 a year ago, scored a 6-1 victory in the last meeting on March 23, 2012, in Lubbock.
The Roadrunners welcome back six letterwinners from last year’s team that posted a 13-11 record and finished third in their first and only season in the Western Athletic Conference with a 3-1 mark.
Headlining that list of returnees is Joel Rubio. The junior from Arnedo, Spain, earned first-team all-conference honors last season after registering a 13-7 singles record, including a perfect 4-0 ledger at No. 3 in league action.
The squad’s lone senior, Kolby Kilgo, is back for his final season after recording a 3-3 mark in singles last year. The Waco native, whose sister, Kenna, is a junior on Texas Tech’s women’s tennis team, was a first-team All-Southland Conference pick at No. 3 doubles with Rubio in 2012.
UTSA also will be bolstered by the return of Yannick Junger, who sat out the 2013 campaign due to injury. The Stuttgart, Germany, native earned first-team All-Southland accolades at No. 1 doubles two years ago as a sophomore.
Junger teamed with Diogo Casa, a sophomore from Pelotas, Brazil, who posted a 13-9 singles mark at No. 2 in 2013, for a run to the ITA All-American Championships Main Doubles Draw last fall.
Three newcomers will look to contribute to the lineup this season. Tomas Stillman, a junior transfer from Harlingen by way of Toledo, and the international freshman duo of Fabian Brand (Netherlands) and Harley Pearson (Australia) all saw action in the fall.
