SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will send five players to compete at this weekend's ITA All-American Championships, which get underway on Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Diogo Casa, Yannick Junger, Harley Pearson, Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman will take part in the pre-qualifying singles draw with the chance to advance to the qualifying portion of the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Monday.
Junger, a junior from Stuttgart, Germany, advanced to the semifinal round of the Singles Gold Draw consolation bracket to lead the Roadrunners at last weekend's H-E-B Baylor Intercollegiate.
Stillman, a junior transfer from Harlingen, took care of UT Arlington's Marek Pesicka in the first round of the same consolation bracket but later was ousted by Daniel Armengol of UT Arlington, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8, in the quarterfinal round. Casa, a sophomore from Pelotas, Brazil, was ousted in the first round of the consolation side by Illinois' Blake Bazarnik, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
In the Singles Green Draw, Rubio, a junior from Arnedo, Spain, downed UTA's Austin Robles, 6-0, 0-6, 6-4, before falling to Yates Johnson of Louisiana-Lafayette, 7-6 (2), 7-5, in the quarterfinals.
Pearson will be the lone freshman in the UTSA lineup this weekend. At the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open last weekend in Corpus Christi, the Australian defeated Texas-Pan American’s Joseph Bishop and Chetan Panditi in the first two rounds but dropped the semifinals match to the Broncs’ Sebastien Job.
