SAN MARCOS — Whitney Flannel recorded her second high jump title in as many weeks and moved to the top of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) leaderboard to lead the UTSA women's track & field team at Saturday's Bobcats Classic.

The sophomore from West Columbia cleared 5-9 ¼ (1.76m) for her second personal best in as many weeks and Flannel now is tied with Utah State's Chari Hawkins at the top of the league standings. That was two inches better than the career best she established in winning last Saturday's Longhorns Invitational crown. In fact, Flannel has improved by more than a half foot since opening the campaign with a mark of 5-3 (1.60m) at the Texas State Elite a month ago. Chenale Smith finished right behind her teammate in second place with a season-best clearance of 5-7 ¼ (1.71m).

Alyssa Diaz and Nina Herrera registered the Roadrunners' other podium finishes at the one-day meet.

Diaz raced to a silver medal in the 5,000 meters in a personal-record 16:56.81, which was nearly 42 seconds better than her previous career best, while Herrera posted a third-place performance in the 800m (PR 2:12.10).

Meanwhile, Zaquita McClanahan broke the program's 19-year-old record in the shot put with a heave of 50-0 (15.24m). That was good for fifth place in the field of 36 throwers and it broke Kim Bush's previous school mark of 49-10 (15.19m) by two inches.

UTSA will take next weekend off before competing at the WAC Championships in Arlington. The four-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, May 8.
